Migrating courses from Moodle 1.9 (Moodle Archive) to Moodle 2
1. Set up your Moodle 2 target course to match the Moodle Archive (Moodle 1.9) source course layout: select topics vs weeks for the course layout, and set the number of topics/weeks in your target course to match your source course. Go into the Settings option under Course administration in your target course to make these changes.
2. Make a backup of your Moodle 1.9 course (from the Moodle Archive).

  • Select the Backup option from your Course Administration block.
  • Deselect all User Data

    Set users to None, user files to No, course files to Yes, site files to Yes.

  • Click Continue to get a summary of the backup.
  • Click Continue again to create the backup, this may take a while.
  • Click Continue again to view your course backup files.

3. Download the file you’ve just created, save it on your computer (Right-click or Command+click > Save Target As).
Safari users: to prevent your browser from automatically unzipping compressed files, you'll need to change one of your settings:
Safari > Preferences > General > Open "safe" files after downloading: uncheck
4. Select Restore from the Course administration category in the Settings block of your Moodle 2 course, to start the import process.

  • Upload the backup file from Moodle 1.9 that you saved to your computer.

    Click Restore

  • You will see a message on the backup details page that your Moodle 1.9 zip archive is not a standard backup file. This is OK, don’t worry about it.

    Click Continue.

  • The default is to merge the backup into the target course. You may opt to delete the contents of the target course before restoring the backup, if you wish.

    Click Continue.

  • Review settings.

    Click Next.

  • Select the specific items to restore, adjust name if need be.

    Click Next at the bottom of the screen.

  • Review material to be restored. Click "Perform restore".
  • You should get a message that the course was successfully restored. Congratulations!

    Click Continue to go to your course.

7. You will need to copy over any section descriptions (week/topic summaries) you had in your Moodle 1.9 course into your Moodle 2 course. To do this:

  • Turn on editing in each course.
  • Click the Edit icon for the description of week/topic one in the 1.9 source course, copy the description materials.
  • Edit the corresponding section description in the Moodle 2 target course, and paste in your content from the source course.
  • Repeat for each section description.
